A look at the reality — and immense challenges — that come with building a team and launching a new product.

Late last year, Covered was selected by Wired to be part of an in-depth article about the Colorado startup scene. Vauhini Vara spent months by our side, joining meetings, learning about our product, and sitting in on investor pitches.

The article goes over the early days of Covered, when we worked on our MVP, made key hires, and dealt with lots of ups and downs (as all startups do).

For anyone interested in starting a company, it’s a great look at the reality — and immense challenges — that come with building a team and launching a new product. You can read the entire article here. Warning: It’s pretty lengthy, so plan to spend at least 10 minutes reading it.

We’ve made tremendous progress since our last interview with Vauhini earlier this year. Here’s what we’ve accomplished in the last few months alone:

Signed Partnerships with National Insurance Carriers

We’ve obtained appointments (which means we can sell insurance policies) with Encompass, Progressive, Stillwater, Safeco, Travelers, and Dairyland to write home, auto, and commercial insurance policies. These are national, trusted insurance carriers, so getting them to work with a new startup is no small feat.

Our vision to build a better, faster, more transparent insurance platform convinced them to get on board, and we’re extremely excited to work with them.

Met with Major Mortgage Companies that are Excited to Work with Us

Our platform makes it easy for loan originators to delight borrowers and close deals faster. Over the last few months, we’ve received a ton of positive feedback during meetings with some of the largest mortgage originators in the US.

There’s incredible demand in the mortgage industry for what we’re building, which is major validation for me and the Covered team.

Brought on Exceptional Advisors Who Believe in Our Vision

In a highly-regulated industry like insurance, who you know can be just as important as what you know. That’s why we’re thrilled that people like David Fitzgerald, Jim Deitch, Steven Schreibman and David Parker believe in our vision so strongly that they joined as advisors.

All of them bring decades of experience and amazing industry connections to the Covered team.

We’ll be making more exciting company announcements very soon, so be on the lookout. In the meantime, check out our launch video:

I’d like to thank the Denver startup community, Galvanize, Rockies Venture Club, Denver Startup week, and Techstars. Without their advice and continued support, it would have been extremely difficult to accomplish what we have so far.

Covered started with just me and an idea — and we’re now a team of 8 that has the attention of some of the largest companies in the US. I can’t wait to see where we’ll be in just a few short months. Until then, my team and I will keep working hard to make insurance better than ever.
