Each month, we feature one member of our smart and scrappy startup family here at Covered. This month, we got the scoop on our VP of insurance, Jennifer Munro. Jen joined us in January of 2017 and since day one, she has added value and positivity while embracing our Covered core values. Her passion for insurance education and risk mitigation has made a profound impact on both the Covered organization, and the Colorado community.

What is your favorite Covered Core Value (Accountability, Transparency, Collaboration, Excellence, and Generosity) and why?

Excellence. If you do not strive for excellence you will be nothing more than mediocre and mediocrity is simply not an option.

What aspect of your role at Covered do you enjoy the most?

Being on the forefront of cutting edge insurance technology is very exciting. Everyone is talking about insuretech and the potential disruption technology will have on insurance so being a part of an organization that is bringing positive change to the insurance industry is awesome.

What do you enjoy about working at a start-up?

I love the enthusiasm and positive energy. It’s fun to be a part of a team where everyone is happy to come to work every day, and I have learned so much.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

What are three career/professional lessons you have learned so far?

  • Accept change.
  • Know your values and stick to them.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak your mind, but always listen more than you speak.

What inspires you?

Being a positive role model for my kids.

What three traits define you?

Organized, Optimistic, and Authentic

What were you like in high school?

I’ve always enjoyed school and learning, but was not a joiner in high school. I wish I had participated in more of the school activities, although I did have lots of great times growing up in Boulder.

What is one thing about you that people would be surprised if they knew?

I love aromatherapy and crystals and I smudge my house with sage and sweetgrass several times a week.

If you had to teach someone a new skill in five minutes what would it be?

How to smudge.

What’s the next thing on your bucket list?

Learn yoga. I’ve never done it!

You’re hosting a dinner party. Who are the 3 people, living or dead, who you would invite?

If you could witness one historical event, what would it be, and why?

One of the alien landings on earth because Ancient Aliens.

What is your favorite activity to do for fun?

Cook with my family.

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?

I haven’t had a lot of weird jobs except insurance. My first real job was as a server in the dining hall of a retirement home. It was weird because we had to wear a full set including cummerbund and bow tie, but I met a lot of really cool elderly people with amazing life stories.

What are your top two guilty pleasures?

Chocolate and Chocolate

Would you rather be a tiny elephant or a giant hamster?

Tiny elephant for sure.
